When is Form DS-11 not required?
If you are eligible to renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82, you do not need to complete Form DS-11. Eligibility for mail renewal generally requires that your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 or older and within the last 15 years, and that it is undamaged and still in your possession.
Applicants correcting a printing error or making a name change within one year of the passport's issuance date may use a different process and do not need DS-11 in those cases.
Is there a deadline for Form DS-11?
There is no fixed deadline for submitting Form DS-11. You apply when you need a passport — whether for upcoming travel or as an identification document.
Allow enough lead time before any planned travel. Routine processing can take several weeks, and expedited processing may be required if your trip is approaching. Check current processing times on the State Department's official website.
